Suicide: Symptoms & Help
Most of us go through a phase of unbearable pain, at least once in a life time, when we wish to die. When we feel helpless and hopeless about an unbearable pang, we try escaping the situation by ending our lives. The feeling is so strong that some of us try to commit suicide, I read somewhere Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain. And the capacity of coping pain varies person to person. There is nothing right or wrong about the feeling, its just a reality of life. If we are feeling suicidal today it does not mean that we are crazy, weak and we really want do die. Its just that we are in more pain than we can actually bear, the pain is exceeding the pain coping resources and we feel suicidal. We can overcome our suicidal feeling by finding ways to reduce our pain or find a way to increase our coping resources.
First of all we should know the symptoms that would help us understand when we or our loved ones in pain. Lets find the common symptoms;
Talking about suicide, words like, I wish I were dead, I should die I dont know why am living, I will kill myself etc.;
\r Change in sleeping patterns, suffering from insomnia or over sleeping;
\r Depression, Purposelessness and hopelessness in life.
\r Sudden personality change;
\r Self-destructive behaviour;
\r Withdrawal from family and friends;
\r Giving away belongings;
\r Saying Goodbye to people as if meeting for the last time;
\r Uncontrolled anger;
\r Dramatic mood changes;
When above symptoms are apparent in you or in someone who you love or care, you need to be cautious. There is always a chance to come out of this state; it is understandable that the tremendous pain is causing this suicidal state of mind. But there is a tiny little part deep inside you which says you can live if you try. If this is not the case then you would have already died. So let us grab that tiny part and say people do go through the same experience and I am not alone. If others could survive after feeling as bad as you are feeling now, then why cant you? Allow some time to yourself before taking the suicidal action and do not burden yourself by trying to deal with the situation alone. You have enough burden of depression, stress and hopelessness within you which compelled you to decide that you should die. The suicidal feeling in itself is very traumatic, so ask for help from close friend, a family member or your trusted doctor. Here are some ways to help you come out of that situation;
Remove every dangerous weapon or object from your home. If you wish to take overdose of a medicine while feeling suicidal, give the medicine to someone who will take care that you take the medicine only when you should;
\r Avoid alcohol or any other drug abuse;
\r Set realistic goals for yourself and go slowly step by step;
\r Write down schedules for a day in the morning, and stick to it no matter what comes;
\r Set priorities in that schedule and cross mark as you finish. This will give you a feeling of control over your life and a sense of accomplishment;
\r Make sure that you do the activity that you always loved to do, reading a book, playing with piano, meditation, light exercise, watching a good movie, going for a long drive while listening to your favourite band;
\r Take care of your health, take balanced diet, take a nap in the day time if you feel like, go for a walk after dinner, come back and go to sleep;
\r Try to spend sometime in the sun as sunlight helps people who are depressed;
\r Try to make new friends, come out of your shell slowly but positively. It would definitely help you;
\r Remember, depression is not a never-ending condition; its a temporary state of mind, a phase of life that has to pass today or the day after.
If we realize the fact that there are more possible ways to live life up to our expectations; we just need to find out those ways, then it is very easy to understand that life is too precious to end just like that. There is more we can offer to this world and we can receive from this world. This simple truth is enough to give us a reason to live, a hope to survive. How can we forget the simple rule of Nature, If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
