Stopping Panic Attacks
According to the National Institute of Mental health, 2.4 million Americans suffer from panic attacks in any given year. These sudden bursts of fear can occur at any time. Panic attacks tend to appear between the ages of 18 and 24. More men than women are affected and sometimes it runs in families. This article will discuss the symptoms, the most common triggers, and finally the treatment options available to anyone suffering from panic attacks.
The symptoms of a panic attack are caused by the release of Adrenalin into the bloodstream. The body is reacting as if it is about to be attacked by a predator. The symptoms may include chest pains, racing heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness, heavy breathing, nausea, feeling out of control, feeling unreal, and fear of going crazy. The exact number of symptoms and the intensity of the symptoms vary greatly depending upon the patient.
Anyone who has experienced a panic attack will tell you how horrible an experience it can be. The first step is to go and see your doctor. Your doctor will work with you to try and determine what is triggering the panic attacks. There are many medical conditions that can trigger panic attacks. Many of these conditions can be treated fairly easily, eliminating the panic attacks. If no physical reason can be found for the panic attacks, then the trigger is internal. Stress is the most common internal cause of panic attacks. This is why panic attacks often start during a time of high stress. Divorce, childbirth, and death of a family member have all been known to trigger panic attacks. Stress can also build up over time. Many sufferers havent experienced an especially stressful event but have been living with stress for a long time. Fear and a lack of understanding will often leave the panic attack victim depressed.
Tranquilizers and antidepressant are often used to treat panic disorders. These drugs can take several weeks to become fully effective. Side effects can be severe in some patients. Once the body has adjusted, these drugs are very effective at controlling the panic attacks. Therapy has also proven to be very effective. A therapist can teach the patients how to control panic attacks and how to better deal with the stress that is triggering the attacks. Many sufferers have managed to help themselves through at home study and training courses.
Panic disorders rarely come back once treated. Work with your doctor to find the trigger for the attacks. Treat the underlying physical cause of the trigger if one is found. Threat the internal trigger if it is not physical. Be patient with yourself. Treatment takes time.
