Spark of Madness
The late great Johnny Carson knew as many celebrities as one person could possibly know. He always seemed comfortable when interviewing these celebrities. Although it is only my humble opinion but from personal observation he seemed to be in awe of two particular celebrities. One was the cinematic legend and gentleman Jimmy Stewart and the other comedic genius Robin Williams.
When Robin Williams would be scheduled to appear Carson could look forward to a night off. The amount of energy that Williams puts forth is incredible. Once he gets started there is no stopping him. Johnny would simply sit back and watch, and laugh of course.
Not many people can let themselves go like he does. He appears crazy to many and probably at certain times in his life has probably crossed that fine line between sanity and insanity. Because of this he possesses rare insight into pain and fear. Insight that he puts to good use in acting to perfection extremely powerful and difficult dramatic roles.
Sometimes I get tired from how fast his mind works. I used to be the victim of racing thoughts and they were the bane of my existence but Robin Williams seems to have turned racing thoughts into a career.
This energy is his power and he seemed to realize this when he said "You are only given a little spark of madness. You must not lose that madness."
How many inventions were created from the minds of people who were once described as crazy. Innovative ideas are typically not created by people who are scared to break the rules or who care what other people think. They are created by people who are capable of thinking in a manner that differs from everyone else. When I use the world "capable" it is my intention to imply that these people possess a gift. They are to be applauded, not shunned.
I ask my children often, "Why in the heck would you want to be like everyone else?" Embrace your quirkiness. Use it to wake up those around you and make them think.
Of course it is important to keep your madness in check and under control in order to live in a civilized society. Still it does not hurt to let it roar once in a while. Shake things up.
We learn from Robin Williams character in Dead Poets Society that "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." This may sound a little dramatic but I am certain that even if your words and ideas do not have a dramatic effect on the world at large, they can have an immediate and massive effect on your world.
