Psychiatry for Physicians: Classification, Part 3
In this part of the article we will discuss about the major classes of disorders in psychiatry according to DSM. The following discussion will reveal each major class with their subsections in brief
a) Disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence This category is further divided into the following disorders
1) Mental retardation
2) Learning disorders
3) Motor skills disorders
4) Pervasive developmental disorders
5) Attention deficit and disruptive behavior disorders
6) Feeding and eating disorders of infancy or early childhood
7) Tic disorders
8) Communication disorders
9) Elimination disorders
10) Other disorders
Except for the mental retardation, all the other childhood disorders belong to axis I.
b) Delirium, dementia, amnestic disorders and other cognitive disorders In these category cognitive disorders due to general medical conditions and substances are included as follows -
1) Deliria
2) Dementias
3) Amnestic disorders
c) Mental disorders due to general medical condition The following disorders due to general medical condition are included in this category -
1) Catatonic disorders
2) Personality disorders
3) Mental disorders NOS
d) Substance related disorders This class deals with
1) Dependence
2) Abuse
3) Intoxication
4) Withdrawal
of the following groups of substance
1) Alcohol
2) Amphetamine
3) Caffeine
4) Cannabis
5) Cocaine
6) Hallucinogens
7) Inhalants
8) Nicotine
9) Opioids
10) Phencyclidine
11) Sedatives, hypnotics, or anxiolytics
Polysubstance abuse is also included in this category.
e) Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders The disorders included in this category are
1) Schizophrenia and its subtypes
2) Schizophreniform disorder
3) Brief psychotic disorder
4) Psychotic disorder due to a general medical condition
5) Substance induced psychotic disorders
6) Psychotic disorder NOS
Rest of the disorders will be discussed in the next part of the article. In this connection we should mention that all the disorder have their code numbers. The abbreviation NOS used above means not otherwise specified.
