Malaysia Under the Spotlight - Somak Holidays
2007 marks 50 years of independence from Britain for Malaysia so watch the country come under the spotlight in the coming months as a number of attention-grabbing celebrations start to unfold. These will make it a great time to plan a trip to a country that has it all: golden beaches, ancient rainforest, towering mountains, spectacular and endangered wildlife, some of the worlds tallest buildings, pulsating street markets and cool designer shopping malls.
Its a destination tailor-made for Britons: English is widely spoken, driving is on the left hand side and youll find plenty of remnants of the empire, not least in the nowhere like home food found widely (although the local cuisine has more to recommend it). Malaysia is friendly, its people good natured and the temperature stays a more-or-less constant 30C year round.
For most holidaymakers Malaysias biggest draw are its beaches, found on its premier resort islands - Penang and Langkawi. Penang is the more evolved: a colourful place to soak up the countrys culture, especially in its vibrant capital, George Town, or to soak up the sun in lively Batu Ferringhi.
Langkawi is worlds away: an eco-island composed of 99 islets with an unhurried pace of life and a landscape of virgin jungle, cascading waterfalls, the majestic Mat Chinchang mountains and caves.\rYou could spend days trawling for the perfect beach. There are back-to-nature stretches, fringed by casuarinas, fine sandy beaches backed by dense rainforest and powdery white sands sloping into shallow water. More recent attractions include the mountain-top Langkawi Cable Car and a brand new marina.
50 years ago, independence was declared in Kuala Lumpur. Nowadays Malaysias skyscraper capital, KL, is an ultra-modern city, boasting the Petronas Twin Towers, the worlds second tallest building, and a hefty helping of shopping and nightlife in its Golden Triangle. Away from KLs bright lights, the wildlife wonderland of Malaysian Borneo is a must. Climb to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, venture into the world-famous Mulu Caves or visit the worlds largest orang-utang sanctuary at Sepilok Forest Reserve, where you can see the critically-endangered apes roam freely.
