List Building With Giveaways - Why They Are No Longer Efective

I am going to jump right into this and say that I do not believe that giveaways are effective in the year 2007, nor will they be in the future. I think that at one time they were effective, but I believe they have lost their effectiveness.

Giveaways online are highly popular web sites that recruit marketers to donate products to giveaway on their web site.

Then, visitors to the giveaway have the opportunity to download for free each of the items that are offered on the site. The catch to the visitor is that they have to opt in to each of the marketers lists if they want the free gift. So the marketer who puts up the free gift gets the opt in lead of the person who downloaded the free gift.

In theory, this sounds really good if your gift gets downloaded 1000 times, you get 1000 opt in email subscribers. And when these first came out, I imagine that they were productive than they are today.

The problem with these today is that people are already on multiple email lists, which dilutes the impact of each additional email. Now, someone comes to the giveaway, downloads 60 items, one of which is yours, and each the marketers (including you) get the opt in email.

But what happens when all of you start mailing this person? They become overwhelmed and the response rate goes down.

I have experimented with these, and have consistently found that they do not produce high-quality subscribers for me. And of course I classify someone a high-quality subscriber if they spend money with me. And giveaway leads generally do not.
