List Building - How to Affiliate Market to Profit from Your List
So you have a list. Cool. You have heard that you should be mailing your list and that you should earn somewhere between 50 cents and a dollar per subscriber per month.
But you arent.
You have the list. You have a little autoresponder sequence set up. You mail them the prewritten emails from your affiliate programs. But you arent getting much, if any, of a response.
Whats wrong?
Congruency.
Congruency? Yep. Your emails must be congruent with your subscriber opt in process; they must be congruent with you. You see, if you use a squeeze page designed and written by John Doe Copywriter, the subscribers you gain from that have bonded with J.D. Copywriters style and persona, not the one used by the chap that wrote the affiliate email. Same thing if you wrote the copy for your squeeze page. Your subscribers bond with you. They KNOW you did not write the emails that you didnt write. Why? Because your style and theirs are different. Your sentence structure is different.
For example, you are reading this article right now. If you read all the way through and click on one of my links at the bottom, I make the assumption that you like my style. Not that it is special, or great, or any other nonsense, just that something I have written clicks with you.
Now, if you go to a squeeze page that I have written personally, you will be much more likely to opt in to my email series than if some other copywriter had written my squeeze page copy. Why? Because if I write it, this article and the squeeze page are congruent - they both have the same style, the same flavor, if I may.
And the same concept applies to the emails.
I have done some un-scientific testing of my email responses. When I send out a prewritten email from one of my affiliate programs my click through rate ranges from 5-10 times less than when I write a letter myself. And I am no copywriter - I think it is just that my subscribers have bonded with my style. That is what works for them. And one more thing - it is not just about my style. It is about the bond that develops between me and them, via the words. Like the fact that you are still reading this. Some articles you read the first paragraph and quit. This you read to this point. Some of you will click my link at the bottom, some will not. But those of you that do, have bonded in some way with my style. And that is what you will expect in my emails. By the same token, there are many other people who have read this article and didnt get past the first sentence. But they are reading someone elses right now, who has a different connection than I do, and they will opt in to their list. A lot of this has to do with chemistry.
OK, so in order to affiliate market to your list, you must write your own emails. Bottom line. The first few you write will be no good, probably. But that is OK. Send them anyhow (they might be better than you think). Monitor open rates (to test subject lines) and monitor click through rates (to monitor your email content). After you have written 20-30 emails, and sent them out, you will see that some emails have high click through rates and others have low click through rates, so study the emails. What did you do different? What made the difference? Become a student, not just of the industry and the emailing process, but of your own stuff. Learn what works and what doesnt, for you specifically, and your profits will go up.
