Leadership Wins In The Long Haul

Oversight of materials, equipment, and personnel requires plans and organization to achieve the goals of the owners. That oversight must be focused on fulfilling the owners instructions and goals.

Even in a large corporation these cannot be ignored and must be kept in mind.

When oversight functions through daily task by task directives the overseer is failing to enlist personnel as followers. The personnel have a sense of lost personal identity, capabilities, and realized trust in them.. Though this description may be harsh it does illustrate a lack of leadership.

While serving in the US Air Force one Squadron Commander, a major, led in a better way. Each of us were accepted as knowing what we were doing. If one faulted through error and came before him, he would have a discussion with the individual the first time, and part with the words, \"consider yourself chewed out.\" The second appearance before the major included stronger words and potential results. The third time, the major took penalty actions. He managed facilities and equipment, and led personnel, to achieve plans and goals.

Leadership acknowledges the talents and skills of each individual by encouraging, supporting, and using those abilities with trust and appreciation. And it is these individuals who will seek and gain new talents and skills while perfecting the ones they already possess.

In the treatment of personnel leadership treats all personnel the same. There are no \"least\", or sorting by some class type actions. The janitor who performs well is a person equal to the most \"talented\" person in the group. He is a person, has talents and skills, and uses them well. Similarly, each person in a group is equally treated with knowledge and respect. Each person knows the behavior of the leader, respects this kind of treatment, and responds to it with a performance wanted by the leader. As a result, the whole group is recognized for performance and accomplishment.

When a leader acts with a mentality of \"I said it and that is that\", or without necessary facts and knowledge he becomes known as a \"puff\" and respect for him is lost. The stature of the leader is based in two important areas: the leader learns truthful knowledge, accepts facts and truth, and is an example of them, and, he treats all personnel as brother humans, in a mind set of brotherly love.

Leadership also has one goal on which everyone in the group can focus. There can be, and should be, sub-goals that clearly aim at that one major goal. Confusion and misdirection are voided making it easy for each group member to stay focused, and to know where he is going with his efforts.

Leadership neither sorts people into \"sub-groups\" for longer than temporary tasks, nor becomes remote from individuals in the group being servant to all in the group. Depending on the size of the group the leader will spend time with at least one individual each day. He will pick up a hammer and nail a board with him. He will become more than casually acquainted with every member of the group in that members area. That raises the self-esteem of the individual and improves the knowledge of the leader.

Leadership is out there leading, even willing to perform any task if needed, and treats all personnel as peer human beings.
