Impulsive Behaviors and Their Consequences
I am convinced that in some cases, people who engage in impulsive behaviors create depressive and anxiety based syndromes, because of their behaviors. Imagine if you will an individual who is primarily impulsive in their behaviors. This person has a "quick thought", which the consequences of, are not thought through to their consequences. If this thought turns out to be a negative thought, then the person is at risk for psychological distress based upon the acting out behavior. The behavior tears at their body and mind creating distress. Since it is natural to seek relief from distress, they try to slow down in some manner. They take a day off from their activities of daily life, until their mind can catch up to their body. If the pattern becomes chronic, the syndrome develops and mental illness develops as an externally induced case of anxiety leading to fatigue and ultimately depression. In more advanced cases, withdrawal from their activities of daily life in varying degree develops and can even lead to phobic or social isolation based upon the cumulative amount of damage. This in turn could cause long medical leaves from work or school and in some cases being disabled for life. The whole premise is the body is trying to keep up with a mindset and behavioral pattern that cannot and must not be sustained. This may be a form of perfectionism, possibly stemming from feelings of inferiority or fear of failure in order to compensate.
One remedy is what I call the "S.T.O.P. Method"; it is an acrostic with each first letter representing a word, i.e,
Stop what you are doing!
Think of all possible consequences of your behavior, especially the negative ones!
Offer yourself alternatives by thinking of all the positive ways you can handle the problem or situation!
Plan and develop a well thought out and constructive course of action, based upon rational responses to the problem or situation!
I believe you will find your life will go somewhat smoother, if you practice this technique for ninety straight days! Good health to you!
