How can an American become a global leader? Hoyle, author of Leadership and Futuring, maintains that successful visionaries demonstrate the following characteristics: (a) a capacity for caring for others, (b) clear communication of vision, and (c) support and inclusiveness of others. Hoyle also maintains that effective leaders model the way.
Lets apply this principle. Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life, is a global leader. He didnt graduate from an affluent university. He actually graduated from California Baptist University. However, he has lectured in cities of Oxford, Cambridge, and at the University of Judaism. He has spoken at international forums, including the United Nations. His best-selling book has sold over 25 million copies globally, and Warren has been named one of Americas Top 25 Leaders by U.S. News and World Report.
Currently, he and his wife donate 90% of their income to charity. Many people criticize his evangelical messages in his books. Warren, with his California upbringing and Southern Baptist roots, has transcended cultural barriers. Obviously, God gives the increase in his success. Warrens ministries tapped the innermost needs of everyone, which is to life a meaningful life. Therefore, individuals can also become international leaders when they target the basic needs of humanity.
