Vagus Nerve Stimulation Should be Used Early in Treatment when Traditional Antidepressants Fail

Lifetime Prevalence of Depression and the Age-of-Onset Report Distributions of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders(DSM) in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication

The paragraph title sounds complicated, but the study conclusions are critical and simple to understand. Lifetime prevalence estimates are as follows: anxiety disorders, 28.8%; mood disorders, 20.8%; impulse-control disorders, 24.8%; substance use disorders, 14.6%; any disorder, 46.4%. Median age of onset is much earlier for anxiety (11 years) and impulse-control (11 years) disorders than for substance use (20 years) and mood (30 years) disorders. Half of all lifetime cases start by age 14 years and three fourths by age 24 years. Later onsets are mostly of comorbid conditions, with estimated lifetime risk of any disorder at age 75 years (50.8%) only slightly higher than observed lifetime prevalence (46.4%).

Lifetime prevalence estimates are higher in recent cohorts than in earlier cohorts and have fairly stable intercohort differences across the life course that vary in substantively plausible ways among sociodemographic subgroups.

Conclusions: About half of Americans will meet the criteria for a DSM-IV disorder sometime in their life, with first onset usually in childhood or adolescence. Interventions aimed at prevention or early treatment need to focus on youth and young adults. The earlier the disease is treated, the better chance for a successful recovery. If traditional antidepressants do not provide adequate relief from depression , vagus nerve stimulation therapy is a powerful yet relatively simple procedure.

Bipolar Disorder Research

The primary goal of a bipolar disorder research is to determine the genetic and other factors that cause people to experience manic and depressive moods. Most individuals know that bipolar disorder tends to run in families and involves many environmental factors. Research aims to enable doctors and patients to have a better understanding of mood swings, to establish better treatments, and to provide better medical advice to sufferers.

Bipolar disorder is a serious disorder of the brain. Abnormalities in the brain biochemistry are mainly responsible for the extreme shifts in mood, thought, energy, and behavior. Since people experience mood swings from high (mania) to low (depression), bipolar disorder is often referred to as \”manic-depressive illness.\” The illness normally begins in late teenage years or early adulthood, but in some cases it emerges earlier. The major treatments for this disorder involve a combination of medications and psychotherapy.

There are a variety of research approaches. Among the major approaches are neuroscience studies, basic science approaches to brain and behavior, genetic investigations, epidemiological studies, and clinical research. Genetic investigations reveal the involvement of genetic factors in the transmission of bipolar disorder. These studies have concluded that in the cases of many patients, a family genetic disorder underlies bipolar disorder. Researchers anticipate that recognition of these defective genes can assist with better diagnostic procedures, treatments, and preventive interventions.

Brain imaging technologies, structural imaging technologies (e.g. magnetic resonance imaging), and functional neuro-imaging technologies (e.g. positron emission tomography) are now used by researchers to learn what goes wrong in the brain to produce this mental illness.

Research studies into treatment are dedicated to improving treatments for bipolar disorder. Many patients can be cured using currently available treatments. However, many important challenges remain. Some drugs work well for years and then slowly lose their efficiency. Clinical research is a good means for determining the best use of available treatments and treatment combinations.

All About Common Treatments for Depression

Of the treatments available to treat Depression, I would say the most common would be Psychotherapy also known as talk therapy. There are four basic approaches of psychotherapy; Cognitive/Behavioral, Interpersonal, Psychodynamic, and Psychosocial.

The type or types of therapy you receive will depend on the type and depth of Depression you have.

Medications are often used to stabilize Depression that can be mild to severe There are four classes of medications that are most commonly used to treat Depression.

MAOIs - monomine oxidase inhibitors have been known to reduce the effectiveness of other medications you might be taken. Certain foods must be avoided to prevent a serious reaction. These classes of drugs are rarely used now because of the serious side effects.

SSRIs - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors is a newer form of antidepressant medication. It works by changing the amount of Serotonin in the brain.

SSNRIs - Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors increases the amount of both Serotonin and Norepinephrine.

TRYCYCLICS affect the levels of two neurotransmitters in the brain; norepinephrine and Serotonin in the brain. These have more side effects than other antidepressants.

Herbal Treatments are becoming more common treatments for Depression and are taken more in the form of supplements. Specific herbs that are known to have a positive effect on mood/depression are mixed in a specific formula. These herbs can include Chamomile, known as a mild sleep aid and may lift mood and metabolism. Gingko Biloba aids memory, increases the blood flow to the brain, and eases symptoms of Depression.

Alternative Treatments that are very common to both Eastern and Western cultures are listed below.

Acupuncture is performed by inserting varying lengths of needles into the skin at specific points on the body that are thought to be connected to the part of the brain affecting mood.

Acupressure works in a similar manner as acupuncture but without the needles. Pressure is put on specific points on the body to stimulate the brain and elevate your mood.

Chiropractic medicine is a deep muscle massage. Chiropractic medicine is directly related to the spine. Massage is done on areas specifically related to various parts of the body. The goal is to bring the body into proper alignment. This is thought to ease symptoms of health conditions including Depression.

VNS - Vagal Nerve Stimulation is a procedure where a device similar to a pacemaker is placed in the chest. It delivers a pulse along the Vagal Nerve that runs from the neck to the brain to stimulate the nerve and produce relief from symptoms.

TMS - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is done by a doctor who uses a hand-held magnetized coil that is electrically charged. The coil is passed over the patients scalp and the pulse goes through the skull to stimulate the brain. This is a relatively new procedure and has the potential of becoming a very exact procedure where specific parts of the brain can be targeted for treatment. It shows real promise.

Depression is an illness that can go unnoticed for a long time. If you think you or a loved one may be depressed, you are strongly advised to get help as soon as possible. There is a wide variety of treatments available. Consult with your doctor because s/he is a great source of information on where you can get the proper help.

3 Ways To Ease Depression Isolation

One of the hardest symptoms to deal with during a depressive episode is feeling disconnected from reality. This feeling causes sufferers to retreat further and further into their own world. They become isolated from their loved ones and friends and the loneliness deepens the depression.

Heres three ways to stop isolation from making depression worse.

1. Have at least one person you can turn to and have regular contact with 3-4 times a week. Someone you can call when you need to talk, someone who can be with you just watching TV or going to a movie. You dont have talk about how you feel if you dont want to and be clear that you dont want to be questioned about your feelings. Hopefully, theyll understand this and will be there for you when you need them.

2. There will be times when you just want to shut out the world and have your own space. Many sufferers just want to be alone in a quiet room such as their bedroom. Theres nothing wrong with this at all. But try not to make it a daily or regular habit. Schedule this once, maybe twice a week at most and be strict with it. Its about a balance. Yes, shut the world out for a day or two each week. For the rest of the week, be around people, especially the special person we discussed in the first paragraph.

3. When you do shut the world out, do it in a way that helps you rather than hurts you. So, instead of retiring to a dark room and lying in bed to brood about your problems, try these: Mind puzzles logic problems, crosswords, spatial puzzles etc. jigsaw puzzles, draw or paint, play a musical instrument, write stories, watch TV or a movie, or read a book or a magazine and listen to some music. With a book and music, avoid anything too heavy or deep. Keep it nice and light. In this way, isolation doesnt become a period of deep introspection where you worry or fret about problems or go over the past or beat up on yourself. You get the peace and tranquillity but not the torment that can accompany it during a depressive episode.

If you feel isolated and that life seems like a virtual reality, then please put these techniques to use. Isolation is a part of depression and the key to lessening the impact is to understand how it happens and use it so it helps you beat depression instead of keeping you trapped in it.

Depression - 12 Drugs Recommended By Experts Which Ones Work

In a recent survey a hospital tested 12 natural drugs recommended by health food shops for depression.

What are they and which ones work? Lets find out.

The drugs recommended were:

Vitamin B Complex, Bio strath liquid tonic, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan, Cats Claw, Chinese herbal tea, Coenzyme Q10, Floradix liquid tonic, Gingko Bilboa, Ginseng, Guarana, Multivitamins and Royal jelly.

So which of the above work according to the survey?

None of the them.

In fact, in some cases they concluded that taking some of the above to excess could be unhealthy.

So What natural cures work?

Well there is evidence that St Johns Wort can be helpful and this is recommended by many alternative health practitioners as a good supplement, but there are concerns about side effects.

The good news!

There is one naturally occurring compound that is proven to help depression and its cheap and plentiful.

The compound we are referring to may however surprise you its Nicotine.

Nicotine is healthy?

Yes it is.

Nicotine has a bad reputation as it is consumed in cigarette smoking, but it is some of the other 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoking that are the killers NOT nicotine.

Nicotine is in fact part of the natural food chain and is found in many common foods such as potatoes, tomatoes and chillis.

Nicotine in its natural state is perfectly safe and non toxic.

Why does nicotine help

Quite simply, nicotine influences neurotransmitters in the brain that affect our moods and make us feel better as well as improving concentration and memory.

Proven in numerous clinical tests

The affect of Nicotine in improving the mood of people with depression has been proven in numerous clinical studies over the years, which has led many drug companies to research a pure nicotine supplement to treat depression.

Products on the market

Another product that has been looked at by several companies and is on the market already is nicotine water.

Water is the safest delivery method for nicotine and is cheap and healthy.

Originally conceived to help smokers when they could not or did not want to smoke, but it is now being bought by people with depression.

In terms of a natural supplement to treat depression Nicotine is ideal as its cheap, safe and can alleviate the symptoms of depression, which is good news for millions of people worldwide who suffer with the condition.

Understanding Bipolar Depression

Bipolar depression is a mood disorder characterized by the alternation of depressive and manic states. The distinguishing characteristic of bipolar depression is the presence of at least one episode of mania. It is also presumed to be a chronic condition because most of the people having manic episodes are likely to have another episode of it in the future. Every person with bipolar depression has a pattern of mood cycles, combining manic episodes with depression, which is unpredictable until the path is found. Bipolar depression usually begins during the teen or early adulthood years and continues throughout one`s lifetime. It`s usually not considered a psychological problem because it happens in episodes, but those who have it may suffer for years without proper treatment.

The exact cause of bipolar depression has not yet been determined. However, most scientists agree that there is no single cause for being bipolar. Scientists believe that stressful factors trigger the first episodes of mania. One reason a person may be bipolar is that the condition is genetic. It appears that many different genes act together in conjunction with a person`s surroundings which create the symptoms associated with bipolar depression. Another cause of bipolar depression could be from the differences in brain structures. MRI tests have shown that those suffering from bipolar depression may have slightly different brain structures than the people who are not effected by the condition. There is also evidence that bipolar depression may be triggered by environmental stresses such as the death of a loved one, the birth of a new baby, or the loss of a job. After a stressful event, a psychological cycle of depression and mania develops in the people with bipolar depression.

Some people do not understand that depression can cause a person to be unable to make simple life decisions. That is why it is important that people with bipolar depression educate their friends, family, and co-workers on the signs of their depressive episodes. Some of the warning signs that you should educate these people on are:

* Lethargy

* Fatigue

* Insomnia

* Lower activity levels

* Loss of interest in activities.

Educating these people puts you in a position to help make sure you take proper action at the start of the episode.

The intensity and frequency of mood swings will vary from person to person. Individuals with bipolar depression may progress to a different category of bipolar depression that gets worse over time of their illness. There are four categories of bipolar depression:

*Bipolar I

*Bipolar II

*Bipolar NOS

*Cyclothemia

The treatment of Bipola I disorder requires one or more mixed or manic episodes. The previous course of the illness may include depressive episodes and hypomania, but the treatment requires only one mixed episode. Bipolar II, the most common form of bipolar depression, is characterized by episodes of disabling depression and hypomania. The diagnosis of Bipolar II requires at least one hypomanic episode. This is used primarily to change from unipolar depression. A patient may be depressed and it is very important to find out if the hypomania has ever caused manic episodes in which the patient was in an uncontrolable state. Bipolar depression is not treated the same way for everybody. Only your doctor can determine the proper cure and exact classification of bipolar episode.

Depression Can Effect Seniors Too

One common myth about aging that many people believe is that as you grow older, you have a significantly greater risk of suffering from depression. That is simply not true, just because you are aging, does not mean you have to suffer from depression as well. All of us have to face difficult situations as we age, the loss of loved ones, the inability to do the things we once could, health issues, etc., but there are ways of dealing with all of these problems without letting yourself succumb to depression.

Current depression studies indicate that out of all adults who are at least sixty-five years young, only about fifteen percent show any symptoms that could be associated with depression. Since many of the symptoms that accompany depression can limit ones ability to perform even daily care tasks, factor that in with the similar problems that come with aging, and many of those adults end up needing help in caring for themselves. So, if you are a senior citizen, it is important that you find ways to deal with your depression before it impacts your life, especially if you value your independence.

Another scientific study shows that elderly people who often have symptoms of severe depression for at least a six year time period are at a much greater risk of being diagnosed with cancer sometime in the near future. Not only are you more prone to develop cancer, leaving your depression untreated can also put you at risk for developing Alzheimers disease, which is the reason that many seniors end up in skilled care facilities each year. Family members just do not have the skills needed to handle this disease, no matter how much they want to care for their elderly, they are just unable to do so. Sooner or later, they will realize that they have got to seek help.

Depression should be treated, before it impacts your life. It is often more difficult to diagnose and treat in aging adults, but it can still be done. There are many diseases that have similar symptoms, which may cause a physician to overlook the underlying cause of all of the problems, severe depression. If there is a simultaneous medical illness, it is easy to focus on treating the illness, bypassing the depression altogether.

Elderly people often feel ashamed or embarrassed to discuss their feelings. They fail to seek treatment, thinking that they are just in a funk, and will get out of it on their own. Another reason that many elderly fail to seek medical treatment for their depression is the fact that they often live off of very limited incomes, and simply cannot afford to pay for an extra visit to the doctor, or for a new medication each month. If they do have Medicare, chances are they will still be left with a hefty bill that Medicare will not cover, especially due to all of the prescription plan changes that have been taking effect recently. They may have family that they could turn to for financial help, but for many it is a matter of pride, they dont want to ask their children for money because they feel as though they should be helping their children, not the other way around.

If they do bite the bullet and schedule an appointment with their physician, they may have problems with the medication that is prescribed. The elderly tend to be more susceptible to the dangerous side effects of many medicines, and antidepressants have a long list of side effects with them. If they are taking medicine for other conditions, their antidepressant medication may cause dangerous interactions, especially if they see a new doctor and forget to tell him all of the medications they currently take. Seniors are often on so much medication that they have a hard time remembering when they are supposed to take what, and what the correct dosage of each is. The best thing that a senior who is suffering from depressive symptoms can do is talk to their physician. The physician should be told what medications are currently being taken, what the problem is, and how the patient feels about treatment. The physician should work with the patient to help find the best treatment plan, so they can start feeling normal again.

Seniors may respond better to treatment sessions with a mental health therapist, or a combination of therapy and medication. If you seek help and dont feel that your treatment program is working for you, dont be afraid to speak up and say so. You are the best judge of how you feel, and your doctor cannot help you if there is a communication problem. They take the information that you give them, and combine that with test results to try to come to a diagnosis and treatment plan. You are in integral part in your own treatment, regardless of the condition!

Suicide: Symptoms & Help

Most of us go through a phase of unbearable pain, at least once in a life time, when we wish to die. When we feel helpless and hopeless about an unbearable pang, we try escaping the situation by ending our lives. The feeling is so strong that some of us try to commit suicide, I read somewhere Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain. And the capacity of coping pain varies person to person. There is nothing right or wrong about the feeling, its just a reality of life. If we are feeling suicidal today it does not mean that we are crazy, weak and we really want do die. Its just that we are in more pain than we can actually bear, the pain is exceeding the pain coping resources and we feel suicidal. We can overcome our suicidal feeling by finding ways to reduce our pain or find a way to increase our coping resources.

First of all we should know the symptoms that would help us understand when we or our loved ones in pain. Lets find the common symptoms;

 Talking about suicide, words like, I wish I were dead, I should die I dont know why am living, I will kill myself etc.;
\r  Change in sleeping patterns, suffering from insomnia or over sleeping;
\r  Depression, Purposelessness and hopelessness in life.
\r  Sudden personality change;
\r  Self-destructive behaviour;
\r  Withdrawal from family and friends;
\r  Giving away belongings;
\r  Saying Goodbye to people as if meeting for the last time;
\r  Uncontrolled anger;
\r  Dramatic mood changes;

When above symptoms are apparent in you or in someone who you love or care, you need to be cautious. There is always a chance to come out of this state; it is understandable that the tremendous pain is causing this suicidal state of mind. But there is a tiny little part deep inside you which says you can live if you try. If this is not the case then you would have already died. So let us grab that tiny part and say people do go through the same experience and I am not alone. If others could survive after feeling as bad as you are feeling now, then why cant you? Allow some time to yourself before taking the suicidal action and do not burden yourself by trying to deal with the situation alone. You have enough burden of depression, stress and hopelessness within you which compelled you to decide that you should die. The suicidal feeling in itself is very traumatic, so ask for help from close friend, a family member or your trusted doctor. Here are some ways to help you come out of that situation;

 Remove every dangerous weapon or object from your home. If you wish to take overdose of a medicine while feeling suicidal, give the medicine to someone who will take care that you take the medicine only when you should;
\r  Avoid alcohol or any other drug abuse;
\r  Set realistic goals for yourself and go slowly step by step;
\r  Write down schedules for a day in the morning, and stick to it no matter what comes;
\r  Set priorities in that schedule and cross mark as you finish. This will give you a feeling of control over your life and a sense of accomplishment;
\r  Make sure that you do the activity that you always loved to do, reading a book, playing with piano, meditation, light exercise, watching a good movie, going for a long drive while listening to your favourite band;
\r  Take care of your health, take balanced diet, take a nap in the day time if you feel like, go for a walk after dinner, come back and go to sleep;
\r  Try to spend sometime in the sun as sunlight helps people who are depressed;
\r  Try to make new friends, come out of your shell slowly but positively. It would definitely help you;
\r  Remember, depression is not a never-ending condition; its a temporary state of mind, a phase of life that has to pass today or the day after.

If we realize the fact that there are more possible ways to live life up to our expectations; we just need to find out those ways, then it is very easy to understand that life is too precious to end just like that. There is more we can offer to this world and we can receive from this world. This simple truth is enough to give us a reason to live, a hope to survive. How can we forget the simple rule of Nature, If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
