Bipolar Disorder Symptom

Bipolar disorder is a very serious problem that is not to be taken lightly. While most commonly this disorder is characterized by the frequent and extreme mood swings, there are a variety of different symptoms that can occur with this problem. If you or someone you love may have this problem, it is important to recognize early symptoms to ensure that they get help as soon as possible. While having one bipolar disorder symptom may not be cause for too much concern, having a variety of the symptoms should be a warning that you need to take action.

There are two different phases of bipolar disorder that most people experience. The symptoms can be very different, depending on which phase of the disorder the person is in. It is important to understand the two different phases and the symptoms that go along with them.

Manic Phase

There are a variety of symptoms of bipolar disorder that are shown during the manic phase. One bipolar disorder symptom that is very common is extreme euphoria or irritability. Racing thoughts, and excessive chatter and talking is another symptom to watch for as well. Usually, during this phase, people tend to need less sleep and they have boundless energy and an inflated self-esteem as well. In this stage, another bipolar disorder symptom may be recklessness and impulsiveness, which can lead to promiscuity, excessive spending, and very fast driving. Hallucinations also may be a symptom that is experienced during this stage as well.

Depressive Phase

The symptoms that are experienced during the depressive phase are almost opposite of those experienced during the manic phase, which is one reason that many people do not realize that bipolar disorder may be the problem. In this phase, the number one bipolar disorder symptom is depression and decreased self-esteem. At times, the depression may become so bad that the person becomes suicidal, which is very dangerous. Usually, in this stage, the person will experience low energy levels and will be tired and sleepy all the time. Insomnia may be experienced as well and their speech may be slow and slurred and their coordination may not be good either. Usually, during this stage, loss of interest in normal activities occurs and it becomes difficult to concentrate on anything at all.

If you or someone you care about has even one bipolar disorder symptom, it is best that you seek medical attention. The earlier that bipolar disorder is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat it effectively. This is a very serious problem, and you should never diagnose yourself. Be sure that you discuss any symptoms that you are having with the appropriate practitioner. It can be very easy to miss the first signs of the problem, so if any of the symptoms are applicable to you, get help immediately.
