ADHD Tip - Good Study Habits Are Important In School & Even More Important For A Child With ADHD

Struggling in school is not exclusive to children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Even kids who naturally do well in school can still struggle with good organization and study habits.

Study skills are a necessary foundation for any child who wants to be successful in school. In fact, study skills can give any student an advantage and help them perform better. Simply put, study skills are nothing more than a routine, method, or trick to learn and retain certain information. Good study habits also help a student become organized as well as developing a routine.

Sounds to me like this is exactly what a student with ADHD could benefit from.

You see, when a student struggling with ADHD gets overwhelmed by either their emotions or by having higher energy, it requires more discipline to remain focused, organized, and on task.

Consider for a moment what happens when you have a rough day at work or at home. Is it harder for you to focus on everything else going on? Or do you too become preoccupied by the days events?

Simply put, whether a child struggles with ADHD or not, study skills are an excellent method to getting organized and having a plan of attack for their work.

Good study habits include:

  1. Taking notes in class.
  2. Reviewing your notes.
  3. Spending time each night reviewing your notes.
  4. Planning ahead.
  5. Study partners.
  6. Asking for help.
  7. Doing extra work.
  8. Knowing when to take a break.
  9. Highlighting in books (if it works for you).
  10. Flashcards.
  11. Study guides.

The above is an abbreviated list of all the different methods that a student can utilize to be more organized and find greater success in school.

For a child struggling with ADHD, the same methods can and do work. However, they might need to build in additional supports to minimize distractions, interruptions, and to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

And now I would like to give you access to a 50-minute audio interview with a successful professional who has struggled with and managed his symptoms of ADHD for 15 years.
