A Good Workout Makes You Feel Better

When we exercise feel-good hormones called endorphins are released throughout the body. These serve to improve natural immunity, reduce the perception of pain and improve mood. At the same time, levels of the stress hormone cortisol are significantly reduced, releasing tension and anxiety.

This harmonious chemical equilibrium is further amplified in the following ways:

  • Exercise increases your sense of mastery vital for those who do not feel in control of their lives and moods
  • Exercise increases self-esteem
  • Exercise provides a distraction from worry and anxiety
  • Exercise improves physical health, which elevates mood
  • Exercise releases the build-up of stress and frustration
  • Exercise helps you sleep better, which can often be a problem of, and a contributing factor to, depression
  • Exercise increases body temperature, which can have a calming effect on the body
  • Exercise enhances body image and therefore confidence
  • Joining an exercise group or class provides social support and offers a chance to belong
  • Overcoming the challenge of exercise heightens self-confidence

However, low motivation to exercise is a huge obstacle for sufferers. To overcome this, begin slowly, with small doses of exercise, and remember that exercise does not have to be strenuous to be helpful. Walking, gardening, or household work will also benefit. Exercising with a friend or group will also provide the support and encouragement needed.

Exercise will not have the same effect on everyone, and by itself, in most cases, is not an answer to problems of mental illness. But it costs little or nothing, has no harmful side effects, and almost always promotes physical health. Although it is no magic remedy, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain by trying to work off depression and anxiety.
